Southport's vision and core values must shape every decision

To ensure the long term success of the Southport we know and love,
the stated vision and core values in the city's comprehensive plan must be
the foundation for the decisions we make...

-
Preserve the city's historic character. Everywhere we look, there are physical reminders of the city’s past...historic homes, Smithville Burying Ground, the Old Jail, Fort Johnston Garrison House and Franklin Square. Although less tangible, I believe that historic character also resides in our sense of community and our neighborly connections to each other. I support the work of the Southport Historic Preservation Commission.
-
Protect the city's shoreline vista. I believe the simplicity and accessibility of our shoreline for residents and visitors alike, helps define the unique character of Southport. One of Southport’s most iconic views is the Yacht Basin and surrounding marsh. This marsh was zoned open space district in the 1980’s and by maintaining this zoning, the marsh continues to be protected from commercial development.
-
Continue to support a vibrant Central Business District. By maintaining the historic character of our city and our waterfront, we can help ensure the success of our Central Business District now and into the future. The city utilizes accommodations tax revenue to support programs that are enjoyed by the citizens of Southport and encourage visitors from communities outside our city limits and tourists to visit Southport in support our local businesses.
-
Preserve the city’s residential areas. Preserving our neighborhoods is vital to the character of our town. Southport is not a resort beach rental community, we are a community of neighbors. The quality of life in Southport in large measure depends on the residents who live here. We have said over and over again, we are a city of volunteers. We live much larger than most communities our size, because neighbors participate and volunteer their time and talents to help make our community better. The future of Southport, the community we love and our quality of life depends on keeping the neighbor in the neighborhood.
-
Protect the city’s Areas of Environmental Concern. An important update to the Unified Development Ordinance no longer allows wetlands to count as the required open space for new development. This will reduce negative impacts to these environmentally sensitive areas by requiring additional land to be set aside and preserved as open space.
If we continue to remember why we live, work and play here and the reasons people visit our city and we stay true to these values, Southport will take care of us and our tourism-driven economy will continue to thrive and provide our business community with the energy it needs to be successful.
